We are often asked – “Do I need to have a NOCN qualification to work as a celebrant?”
The short answer is “No” an NOCN qualification is not required to work as a celebrant in the UK. The celebrant profession is not regulated in this way, which means there is no legal requirement to hold any specific externally accredited certificate.
At the Fellowship of Professional Celebrants, we have deliberately chosen not to seek NOCN or other external accreditation for our training. Instead, we focus on delivering high-quality, industry-recognised celebrant training that reflects real-world practice and professional standards.
Our celebrant training courses are widely respected and recommended across both the wedding and funeral sectors. We are known for producing confident, skilled celebrants who create and deliver meaningful, personalised ceremonies. In addition, we provide ongoing support and professional development to ensure our celebrants continue to meet high standards throughout their careers.
Ultimately, when choosing celebrant training, it is not about whether a course is externally accredited, it is about the quality of the training, the reputation within the industry, and the support you receive as you build your career.

❌ Myth: You must have an NOCN Level 3 qualification to be a celebrant
✔ Fact: There is no legal requirement to hold any specific qualification to practise as a celebrant in the UK.
Many people searching for celebrant training come across conflicting information. Some providers promote formal qualifications, which can create the impression they are mandatory.
In reality, whilst organisations such as NOCN offer qualifications, these are optional, not required by law, and in fact many funeral directors in particular are against them. Why?, because they are aware that many celebrant training organisations now offering them very much as ‘sales tools’ and are filling the required number of hours with content such as excessive word-processing, and irrelevant essay writing etc, resulting in people clutching the said diplomas, with fabulous typing skills, but little to no idea of how to actually work as a celebrant!

✔ Fact: Celebrancy is not a regulated profession, meaning training providers set their own standards, structure, and approach.
Advice: Find out about the experience of the course leaders and who actually owns the company. Sadly, now as celebrancy becomes more popular, there are more and more people running celebrant training companies with little to no experience themselves.
Our founder and principal course leaders, Terri Negus, has been a celebrant for over 23 years, and a celebrant trainer for over 18 years. After originally training herself though the International College of Celebrancy (Australia) and the Insight Institute (USA), she has gone on to conduct over 4500 ceremonies and has trained more than 2000 other celebrants, so she truly does have a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion to share with you. And when we say “you can train with the best” there are very few celebrants in the U.K. who have Terri’s experience or expertise.

✔ Fact: Being a great celebrant is about:

- Confidence in writing and delivering truly personalised ceremonies
- Real-world experience
A certificate alone doesn’t guarantee these.
We don’t just teach you to read templated scripts, or write a timeline of events, we teach you to write truly unique and meaningful ceremonies for every occasion. Ceremonies which tell stories, and engage the emotions of everybody present.

✔ Fact: Training varies widely. Some courses focus heavily on written coursework and assessment, while others prioritise:

- Do you receive ongoing support and guidance after the course, with a community and network?
